Maintenance of all bwCloud regions starting 07.04.2025
Description
Dear Users of the bwCloud – Infrastructure Service, Herewith we kindly inform you about the next scheduled maintenance window of the bwCloud infrastructure:
Q: TIME PERIOD: 07.04.2025 - 10.04.2025 (one day of maintenance activities per site)
On the dates specified below a one-day-maintenance activity will be taking place on the bwCloud infrastructure for the specific site mentioned:
- 07.04.25 – Site Ulm
- 08.04.25 – Site Karlsruhe
- 09.04.25 – Site Freiburg
- 10.04.25 – Site Mannheim
Q: SCOPE OF THE MAINTENANCE WORK:
A small maintenance has been scheduled in all hosting sites, which means in detail that
- security-related software updates will be performed,
- in addition, all components of the bwCloud infrastructure will be restarted.
Execution of the maintenance activities will cause no user data to get lost or deleted. However, the following constraints need to be considered:
- During the maintenance window OpenStack services will not be available for the specific site (e. g. Dashboard, existing VMs)
- All VMs of the site will be shutdown and will not be automatically restarted at the end of the maintenance window
Q: IMPACT ON bwCloud USERS DURING THE ONE-DAY MAINTENANCE WINDOW:
During the maintenance work the bwCloud infrastructure will not be available for use.
This means in detail:
- All user accounts will be disabled during the maintenance und all virtual machines will be stopped.
- In those cases where bwCloud users did not stop their own VM(s) prior to start of the maintenance window, still running VMs will be stopped by the system administrators as of 8 o’clock in the morning of the site-specific maintenance day. All data on the volume will be saved and will still be available after the maintenance has been finished. Only not yet saved contents as available in the RAM at the time when the VM was stopped, will be lost.
- During the maintenance window OpenStack services will not be available for the specific site (e. g. Dashboard, existing VMs)
-
All VMs of the site will be shutdown and will not be automatically restarted at the end of the maintenance window
- All user data will be saved and will be available again after restart of the VM (exception: unsaved RAM-contents will be lost in case the VM is still being used at start of the maintenance window)
- At the end of the maintenance window all instances will get reassigned the same parameters as were assigned prior to start of the maintenance window: this means the same IP-Adresse(s), the same UUID and the same host names will have been re-assigned at the end of the maintenance window.
Q: RECOMMENDATION / IMPORTANT INFORMATION for bwCLOUD USERS:
- For sensitive instances / virtual machines, we recommend all users to make an external backup of their data in advance – i. e. prior to start of the maintenance window.
- Users will need to log in and manually start the desired instances after the maintenance has been completed.
Q: HOW TO RECEIVE INFORMATION ON MAINTENANCE STATUS:
- The first source for status information is our website:
please check regularly at Maintenance State prior to and during the maintenance window to be informed about the current status of activities - Once the maintenance is completed and VMs can be restarted, this will also be announced on our website.
